The edges of fabric produced during the weaving process, known as "selvage”. Since the beginning of my career in Japan’s fashion industry, I have been drawn to the unintentional beauty of these discarded materials, created as an inevitable byproduct of industrial production. 
This project began with the aim of discovering new value in the precious waste material produced by the last remaining name tag factory in the Netherlands—an industry that has otherwise been lost due to the shift of manufacturing to lower-cost overseas markets. The fringe-like tape, created through brand logo designs, showcases vibrant colors and unique textures, with a striking contrast that highlights the inherent beauty of the material. 

By embracing the distinctive characteristics of this material, the project seeks to transform it into new products and art pieces through creative repurposing. At the same time, it carries a heartfelt intention to support local factories that continue to produce domestically. Breathing new life into discarded materials, this initiative proposes a design approach that connects us to a sustainable future. 

織物の機械で生産される過程で生じる生地端、「捨て耳」。日本のファッション業界でものづくりに携わり始めた頃から、工場の生産工程でやむを得ず生じる廃材の”デザインされていない素材のユニークさ”にいつも心惹かれていました。

このプロジェクトは、オランダ国内に唯一残された（他の工場は海外の低賃金産業の影響で廃業してしまった）服のネームタグ工場から生まれる、貴重な廃材に新たな価値を見出すことから始まりました。ブランドロゴのデザインによって生み出される多彩な色合いとフリンジ状のテープは、質感と色のコントラストが織りなす美しさが魅力です。

素材の特徴を活かし、創造的な再利用を通じて新たな製品やアート作品へと昇華させるとともに、国内で生産を続ける地元の工場を応援したいという思いも込めています。廃材に新たな命を吹き込むことで、持続可能な未来へとつながるデザインを提案していきます。
